UPBEAT MAGAZINE

As with everything else these days, our running costs have increased considerably over recent years, including the printing and posting of the magazines to all of our members twice a year. Unfortunately, we have lost the support of Treatts, who used to cover the mailing of the magazines, so we have been considering ways of economising.

In future the magazine will continue to be available on our website: www.upbeatheartsupport.org.uk and will be emailed to those members who have requested getting theirs that way, but we are asking those of you who want a hard copy to contribute £5 per year towards the cost of printing. You will still be able to collect magazines from our venues and we ask that as many of you as possible use this way of getting your copy. It is also very helpful if individual members take the ones for friends or members to whom they can deliver them by hand.

If you do not wish to have a magazine please let us know by emailing membershiip@upbeatheartsupport.org.uk or by telephoning 01284 747238

If you have already told us that you will read the magazine online, thank you; we appreciate your support. If you would like to sign up for email delivery, please let us know at membership@upbeatheartsupport.org.uk

EXERCISE SESSIONS - HOT WEATHER PROTOCOL

We will continue to open both venues:-

New Bury Community Centre - The nurse will be in attendance as usual and as there is efficient air conditioning in the Centre the exercise session will go ahead albeit adapted to the conditions. Timings might be reduced to 45 minutes or exercise will be gentler with seated warm-up and cool-down and more seated exercise options focus on mobility, flexibility and light resistance work.

We would ask that you stay for fifteen minutes after exercise until your blood pressure returns to normal before leaving. You are encouraged to have a nurse assessment before exercise or at least read the Exercise checklist (one will be available at the desk)

Long Melford is more difficult as no air conditioning available but we will continue to open and have the nurse in attendance, and according to the temperature on the day in the hall, we will have a shorter session (45mins) of gentler exercise.
On days where conditions are considered too extreme for exercise, we could replace the session with an educational session (e.g. heart-healthy nutrition, hydration strategies, healthy ageing, or exercise and cardiovascular health).

Anyone experiencing the following symptoms should not exercise without seeing the nurse.
Dizziness, chest pain, nausea or unusual breathlessness
Headache, confusion or excessive lethargy.
Recent illness/ Recent changes to cardiac medication
AT ALL TIMES WE WILL BE GUIDED BY THE CARDIAC ADVISORS AND INSTRUCTORS
We hope this clarifies the situation and we will review during the summer to see how it is working.

Keeping Safe in Hot Weather

Information for members of Upbeat Heart Support
Your health and safety are our priority.
Why does hot weather affect the heart?
When the weather becomes very hot, your body has to work much harder to keep itself cool. Blood vessels widen to release heat, your heart pumps harder and often faster, and you lose fluid and salts through sweating. For people living with heart conditions, this extra workload can place additional strain on the heart.

You may notice
· Feeling more tired than usual.
· Dizziness or light-headedness.
· Lower blood pressure.
· Breathlessness.
· Palpitations.
· Swollen ankles or dehydration.
· Feeling faint or unsteady.

Why medication matters
Many heart medications can affect how your body responds to heat. Water tablets (diuretics) increase fluid loss, blood pressure medicines may lower blood pressure further when blood vessels widen, and beta blockers may reduce your body's ability to respond to heat. Never stop or change your medication without speaking to your GP or cardiac team.

Why older adults are more vulnerable
As we age, we become less aware of thirst and our bodies are less efficient at controlling temperature. Many people also live with several health conditions and take multiple medications, increasing the risk of dehydration and low blood pressure during hot weather.

Our Hot Weather Exercise Policy
During periods of extreme heat, Upbeat Heart Support may adapt or cancel exercise sessions to keep everyone safe.
· Classes may be shortened or cancelled if conditions are unsafe.
· Where appropriate, exercise intensity will be reduced.
· More seated exercises, stretching and mobility work may be used.
· Regular hydration and rest breaks will be encouraged.
· Blood pressure, heart rate and symptoms may be checked before exercise.

Please tell an instructor immediately if you experience:
· Chest pain or tightness.
· Severe breathlessness.
· Dizziness or feeling faint.
· Palpitations.
· Nausea or confusion.
· Feeling unusually hot or unwell.

Remember
Missing one exercise class because of extreme heat will not affect your long-term progress. Exercising when your body is struggling to cope with the heat could place unnecessary strain on your heart. Our goal is to keep you active, confident and, above all, safe.

First Aid & Defibrillator Training

First Aid & Defibrillator Training

A fantastic group of Upbeat Cardiac Advisors, special instructors, committee members and members took part in first aid and defibrillator training with our very own Martyn Blackford.

Martyn and Latitude Training were, as always, professional, informative and engaging. Thank you once again for delivering another great day of learning.

Training like this is invaluable, not only for refreshing lifesaving skills, but for building confidence to act calmly and effectively in real first aid situations. Knowing what we do can truly make the difference when it matters most.

More photographs are on our Picture Gallery page.

30 Year Anniversary

UPBEAT HEART SUPPORT GROUP
30 YEARS AND STILL GOING STRONG

Upbeat Heart Support celebrating 30 years since its inception. It was formed in July 1995 as a self-help support group and set up by ex-cardiac patients to provide exercise, social and health activities for those who have suffered heart attacks or other heart problems.

Its aim was to encourage and support patients and importantly, their carers to get back to leading as normal life as possible, encouraging a healthy life style and through mutual support provide our members with the confidence to enjoy an active and rewarding life style.

The original members created the group as a Registered Charity and British Heart Foundation provided £100 to set up the group in 1995. A constitution was drawn up and still exists today We began at Bury Leisure centre and after several moves over the years we now operate from The New Bury Community Centre in Bury St. Edmunds on a Monday and Wednesday morning and from the Long Melford Old School Community Centre on a Tuesday morning. We still offer the same degree of care and attention with a nurse and qualified instructor in place at every session.

Upbeat is affiliated to the British Heart Foundation Network– and is recognised by hospitals, GPs and health organisations throughout the area.

To keep Upbeat going requires finance and many varied and innovative fund raising activities from Strawberry Teas to Quiz Nights to Race Nights and so much more. The main source of funding has been via donations, sponsorship events such as the Three Peak Challenge, Sky Diving, Marathons, Abseiling, Wing Walking etc. plus the occasional grant.

Our thanks must go to all those who have served on the Executive Committee and the Social Committees over the years and indeed to all those who have helped and continue to help to make this wonderful organisation survive and prosper.

The group has won two prestigious awards. In May 2017 The High Sheriff Of Suffolk, Geoffrey Probert presented Upbeat Officers with the High Sheriff’s Certificate Of Recognition Award and in 2018 we even surpassed that with The Queens Award For Voluntary Service and officers were invited to attend a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace with Queen Elizabeth ll in attendance. We have had over 2200 members since we started and the current membership stands at over 560. Something must be right.

The recent AGM coincided with the retirement of the present Chairperson, Sylvia Baker who had held the post for eleven years during a very difficult time for the group, i.e. Covid etc. She has been a brilliant chairman and will be missed by the membership. David Axton, who has been closely involved with the group for many years through editing our Upbeat Magazine is taking over the role.

A party was held after the AGM where all members were invited to come and celebrate our 30 years and to present the outgoing chairman with a parting gift.
