I joined Upbeat after suffering a heart attack in 1996, which means that I’ve been a member for almost all of Upbeat’s existence. At that time I was working in Leicester as a primary school head teacher, which I continued to do until retiring in 2007.

I was born in Bury St Edmunds and have lived here ever since. I have two lovely children and two beautiful granddaughters.
Leaving school at 16, I started work for a local architect’s office, before re-training to become a Building Surveyor and then a Chartered Building Engineer.

I was born on the last day of the year in Epsom, Surrey, and grew up in the 1950s in Cheam. I did not find school very easy, especially learning to read. This was not helped by one teacher who used to smack my hand whenever I could not read a word!.

I was born 100 yards from the sea in Blackpool in 1942. My parents ran a boarding house and at the time it was full of American airmen, due to the war. After the war, they ran a fish and chip shop for a few years and later back to running a boarding house, as my Dad had suffered....
